Allonby Village

The small village of Allonby is situated on the Solway Coast, between Maryport and Silloth. It has a history as a fishing village; then for ship breaking; and thereafter was a great favourite with Victorians. The village also once boasted not one but two breweries - located on Brewery Street close to Keswick Cottage.

Popular with locals who come to enjoy the beach and refreshments, Allonby is probably best known for the dramatic and colourful sunsets across the Solway Firth.

Local Amenities

The local store Twentyman's has been serving the needs of the village community for over 100 years with everyday provisions and is reknown locally for its ice-creams.

In addition to seasonal tea-rooms, the village has two pubs: 'Jack's Surf Bar' and the 'The Ship Inn', where Charles Dickens once stayed on a tour of Cumbria. Both provide dinner options. Other food options include a fish & chip shop.**

The nearest towns with a wider range of shops and supermarkets are Maryport, approximately 5 miles south of Allonby, and Silloth, which is about 8 miles to the north. A local bus service runs between the two: the bus stops are within 50m of the cottage.

** Information subject to change - visitors are encouraged to check local amenities and opening times prior to arrival.

In Praise of a Small House on the Coast

Alabanza the sea varnished pebbles
and wind washed dunes;
the spiral staircases hidden in shell.

Alabanza the swallow's dip
and tucked in dreams,
the soft click of the light switch.

Alabanza the magic hag stone
and blue-green marram grass,
the sunsets knocking at the door.

Alabanza the pure bathroom light
and sounds from the secret farm;
the ventilated box on the turn of the stairs.

Alabanza the roasted tomatoes
and cinematic nights,
the day that folded out into a week.
